A body submerged in a fluid is buoyed up by a force equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the submerged part of the body.
The body experiences a gravitational force FG acting vertically downward and, when submerged in a fluid, a buoyant force Fvz acting vertically upward. The resultant of these forces is the force Fv = FG + Fvz. Usually, the direction of the gravitational force is chosen as positive and the direction of the buoyant force as negative.
